In a world saturated with imagery, the work of Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker Ricardo Fischer stands out for its intentionality and depth. His visuals are more than just compositions. They are stories that reflect a profound love for beauty, freedom, and the natural world. Describing his own work as versatile, honest, and authentic, Fischer's mission is clear.

When he isn't behind the camera, he studies philosophy and ethics at Berlin's Humboldt University, a pursuit that shows up plainly in how deliberately he approaches image-making. We spoke with him about his process, his resistance to unsustainable trends, and why stepping away from the lens matters just as much as picking it up.

About Ricardo Fischer

A Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker whose work moves between editorial, fine art, and personal projects. He studies philosophy and ethics at Humboldt University, and his influences range from Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich to photographers Joel Meyerowitz and William Eggleston and cinematographers Roger Deakins and Hoyte van Hoytema.

Diverse Inspirations
From Museums to City Streets

Ricardo's inspirations are refreshingly broad. They range from the works of Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich and photographic greats like Joel Meyerowitz and William Eggleston, to cinematic masters Roger Deakins and Hoyte van Hoytema.

Yet his muse is often found in everyday life. "Sometimes I just go out into nature or sit in a busy part of town and watch what's going on around me and get inspired by it." He even finds ideas springing from the pages of a book. "Overall, it's life that inspires me, cliche as it may sound. I love to face new challenges and try new things."

Technology & Trends
A Philosophy of "Enough"

In an industry obsessed with the next big thing, Fischer adopts a more measured, sustainable stance. While open to technology that genuinely improves his workflow, he consciously resists the relentless chase.

"Of course, it plays a role in my work but I don't follow every trend that comes out. I think it's very important to resist the faster, higher, further, more. That pace is not sustainable." This philosophical resistance to unsustainable pressure is a core tenet of his practice.

The Creative Process
From Meticulous Planning to Natural Flow

His creative process is intentionally flexible, adapting to the project at hand. For client commissions, he is meticulous, taking detailed notes and crafting storyboards, often spending hours perfecting the setup to capture the little details he loves.

In contrast, his personal work is an exercise in release. "When I photograph for myself I try not to think about it too much so the process is more natural. Sometimes the most creative results happen this way." This balance between discipline and spontaneity is key to his versatile portfolio.

On the Art World
Paradoxes and Quick Bucks

Fischer offers a nuanced view of the evolving art world. He acknowledges the double-edged sword of social media, which forces reinvention but also creates pressure. He points to a fascinating paradox: the resurgence of analog photography among youth amidst unprecedented digital technical possibilities.

On the topic of NFTs, he is cautiously skeptical. "Personally I'm not a big fan. A lot of people are using this to make a quick buck instead of the quality of the art form itself." He recognizes their impact on art sales and publishing but remains focused on the art itself.

What's Next
A Book and Fine Art Prints

Looking ahead, Fischer is focusing on two deeply personal projects: publishing a photography book that will integrate his love for writing alongside his visuals, and focusing on the sale of his fine art prints. "Both things are very exciting," he shares.

Wellbeing
The Essential Break

For Fischer, wellbeing is non-negotiable and directly impacts his creativity. He is attuned to the days when he needs a mental break from photography, noting that time off positively affects both his mind and the quality of his work.

Physically, he stays active through rowing, stand-up paddling, and kenjutsu. To escape Berlin's urban intensity, his ultimate reset is hiking with his dog, a simple, perfect return to the nature that inspires him most.
