The LA techno maverick on emo minimal, punishing speakers, and the Danny Tenaglia set that rearranged her life

Why this conversation

I have a soft spot for anyone who can make a room of strangers feel something at four in the morning, and Shoddy Lynn does it on purpose. She calls her sound bouncy techno. Her friends call it emo minimal, which might be the most accurate genre name I have ever heard, moody enough to break your heart and physical enough to move your feet. It is dance music that refuses to pretend it has no feelings.

Her origin story is one I recognise from my own New York years: a single night at Pacha, Danny Tenaglia behind the decks, the kind of set that quietly rearranges a person. The same restless energy built something else entirely, the cult fashion brand Dolls Kill, which she co-founded and shaped as its creative force. But this conversation is about the music, the clubs, the punishing speakers, and her debut album, AVANT PUNK, out now on IMPAKT Records.

The Conversation

Your biggest career highlight so far?

Travelling to places like Dubai and Miami and watching entire crowds lose themselves to my sound. But honestly, watching the LA techno scene explode has been just as thrilling. There is a new energy here, new parties, new collectives, a real hunger for underground music. LA feels like the new Ibiza, and I cannot wait for what is coming this summer.

Your sound is bouncy techno, but your friends call it emo minimal. Where does that come from?

I love grooves that hit hard but still have soul. It is not just about the kick drum, it is about the melancholic melodies, the weird little vocal chops, the tension and the release. My friends started calling it emo minimal because it is moody but it still makes you move, and honestly, I love that description.

What inspires your productions?

Clubs. The lights, the bass, the way a sound system can make your chest vibrate. I don't make music for headphones, I make it for big, punishing speakers. Every club I play teaches me something new about how sound behaves in a room.

Take me back to your first real night as a DJ.

Danny Tenaglia at Pacha in New York, about three years ago. He played from ten at night until eight the next morning, and I danced the entire time. He is unbelievable. That night flipped my whole world.

Your favourite DJs?

Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, and Danny Tenaglia. They all know how to open your ears to a sound you never thought could exist, and they are always thinking ten steps ahead. They don't abide by the rules, and rules suck. Sven will drop a record from ten years ago, Richie can ease anyone into techno, and Danny is just Danny. You cannot beat doing the soul train at nine in the morning with a room full of Studio 54 dropouts.

Favourite venues in the world?

Cielo in New York, for the best sound and the best vibe. Fabric in London, where it is all about the sound. And in LA, Avalon, because the system there is epic and it is all about the music for them, which makes me happy.

Your dream collaboration?

Shoddy Lynn and Danny Tenaglia, featuring Radiohead or Toy Dolls. That would be amazing.

What is next?

More music, more shows, more surprises. AVANT PUNK is just the beginning. I am finishing a full length with my production partner Skyler, the dark, grungy minimal techno we make together as SHDWPLAY, a record full of my vocals and analog low end that nobody has heard yet. There is the Choke My Chord EP coming on Blipswitch, vocal tracks with people like Zoo Brazil and Erphun, and I am working directly with the LA scene, with Compression and Droog, to bring minimal techno here in a big way. Then Europe. Watch out.
