Cristina Coral is an award-winning photographer based in Italy, specialised in creative and fine art photography. Her dreamy and mysterious photographs are like a mirror in which the inner dialogue resides. She loves to explore the complex relationship between subject and environment. She learned photography by herself, teaching herself to capture the world with hidden meanings, portraying them through an idiosyncratic style that has since reached the walls of Galleria Carla Sozzani, Somerset House, and the pages of Vogue Italia.

About

The complexity of the female figure is the best metaphor to represent my own feelings and the fragility and contradictions I often recognise in myself. Coral grew up in an artistic environment and has been a self-taught photographer throughout her career, building a body of work that moves between the contemplative and the uncanny, the remembered and the imagined. Everyday life is her favourite source of inspiration, and memories, which make us who we are, are a relevant and ever-present theme in her work.

Inspirations
Antakly Tell us about your greatest inspirations or influences.

Cristina Coral Everyday life is my favourite source of inspiration. Nevertheless, memories are also a relevant theme and very present in my work, as they make us who we are.

Antakly Fashion photography seems like a clear influence. Was the work of any photographer particularly important for you?

Cristina Coral I am not influenced by fashion photography in particular. I would rather say I am influenced by aesthetic thinking. My vision of beauty is contemplative and detached, while fashion photography is more about production.

Creative process
Antakly What does your typical process in making one of your pictures look like?

Cristina Coral I create a space in which the girls can move with spontaneity, and capture what I feel I need to capture. Only in certain cases do I direct them in some way.

Antakly How do you normally work from idea to sharing with the world?

Cristina Coral I spend a lot of time scouting for the right place and when I find it, I immediately recognise it because it activates my creativity and my imagination. Every single aspect plays a major role in my photography. My work and research for aesthetics towards beauty are a consequence of a very detailed analysis.

"The world of image is constantly changing, but a work of art remains so forever."

Antakly How are current trends in technology and innovation affecting your work?

Cristina Coral Certainly the innovative solutions help to develop different photography techniques and improve the quality of the final product. However, creativity is an innate gift, independent from technology.

Antakly What do you think of the art world and how it works in general?

Cristina Coral I believe creating art means to follow a path from design to realisation. It is necessary to maintain a poetic and personal vision, and within a work there must be a logic even if the interpretations may be different. Art today has fewer rules than it once did and for this reason it is more difficult and not for everyone. The world of image is constantly changing, but a work of art remains so forever.

Wellbeing
Antakly What does wellbeing mean to you?

Cristina Coral Having a sense of wellbeing plays a fundamental role in helping us overcome difficulties and achieve our goals in life. I believe every artist plays a different but necessary part in contributing to the wellbeing of our society, as art is the vehicle for expressing universal emotion. It is important to have a balance between body, psyche and what surrounds us without forgetting that creation sometimes can be painful.
