Update · From Leila Antakly

This is an old interview — and I wanted to give it a follow-up, because our friendship has only evolved. Hellyda is now a mother and an activist. Truly in touch with her soul and humanity, fighting for justice, accountability, and raising awareness to the horrors of war.

She is really in tune with people's energy and vibrations, and hosts women's circles. We've come a long way. Although we have many friends in common, we somewhat met randomly — at the tent at Ibiza Camp at Burning Man, sometime in 2014.

This is the original interview, but I like to give it a follow-up. Because the story keeps going.

Hellyda & Meneghinis.

A gorgeous Brazilian model based in London — with striking looks and a matching sense of style. Co-founder of Meneghinis, a unisex shoe brand born in 2011 from a love of craftsmanship, Venice, and colour.

The Brand

Meneghinis was born in 2011 when Hellyda and her business partners drew inspiration from Venetian XVIII century slippers called Friulane — traditionally worn by gondoliers, handcrafted in Italy in the same traditional way they have always been made. The slippers are crafted from plush velvets to comfortable cottons, with soles made from recycled bicycle tyres.

With her background as a model, Hellyda's idea was to make the collection more contemporary — introducing bright colours and contrasting combinations that would accentuate any outfit. We've seen Meneghinis on both men and women at all kinds of occasions: from weddings to Burning Man. We love them, particularly because they are super comfortable and easy on the feet — which means you can dance longer.

Questions & Answers — Original Interview
Most interesting place or outfit you've seen Meneghinis worn?

I love to see men wearing Meneghinis with a tuxedo. It breaks the seriousness of it — but with a touch of coolness.

I remember feeling amazing in a military green pair last summer in Pantelleria, Italy. And also last summer wearing a black pair with a vintage Japanese outfit.

Can Meneghinis be customized?

Yes — but it takes some time, especially during our busy summer months.

Founder, Editor & Creative · Antakly Projects

My career has never moved in a straight line, and that has always been the point. It began in fashion with a formative chapter at Vogue Italia, followed by an unlikely detour into finance. From there, film, PR, events and production. A role as Director at Wilhelmina Models in Dubai sharpened an eye already trained on people worth watching. Then came the years that shaped the platform: writing, editing, producing photo shoots, a short-lived photobooth business, lots of yoga and eventually Madrid, where the light is just right. Currently I am in the States in a new and exciting field, digital marketing for higher ed, but this remains my passion project. What started as a hobby back in 2003 evolved into Antakly Projects, leading to some exciting conversations, projects, and lots of joy. Throughout all of it, my best friend, one small white Shih-poo called Coco, has been present, unimpressed, and very fluffy.
