Flour Shop

Meet Amirah Kassem — Brooklyn's Cake Extraordinaire

C.R.E.A.M — Cake Rules Everything Around Me. Welcome to the colorful, funky, fondant-free world of Amirah Kassem. Brooklyn-based baker, Wu-Tang collaborator, Stella McCartney inspiration, and the woman who eats ice cream for breakfast in a Disney-themed kitchen. Her trompe-l'œil cake burger and fries caught the attention of Vogue, Nylon, and every fashion-minded party in New York. And the Wu-Tang Clan found her on Instagram.

From Basketball Courts to
Buttercream

Amirah learned to bake from an early age from her mom in Mexico. She studied in New York and began her career in fashion — eventually becoming GM at BLK DNM. During this time she began making cake balls for her friends, and the word spread rapidly. Soon enough, people were walking into BLK DNM asking for the "cake girl."

She left fashion and opened Flour Shop. Her fashion contacts became her number one clients. She's definitely not just another baker making cupcakes — taste and quality are always the top priority, which is why she never uses fondant.

She openly admits her cakes might not look perfect. That's exactly the point. They are original creations — edible pieces of art.

Her trompe-l'œil cake burger and fries creations have caught the attention of Vogue, Nylon, and the entire fashion world. She collaborated with the Wu-Tang Clan on a dessert collection that was photographed and exhibited. They found her on Instagram. Of course they did.

Love this great interview from The New Potato — the NYC spots below are all hers.

No Fondant. Ever.

Cara the Unicorn

Instagram's most memorable trend of 2017 — her Explosion Cake heard round the world.

Amirah's New York

Her favourite spots, honestly told.

Sunday Brunch?
Not a huge fan of brunch in the city — NYC is too crowded for a relaxing Sunday. But if I had to: Clinton Street Baking Company, Balaboosta, and Lodge. Or honestly — brunch at home!
Best people watching?
Dylan's Candy Shop — nothing better than seeing a kid in a candy store!
Culinary scene?
Lincoln. Not only is the food amazing, but they have nothing to hide — an all-glass kitchen. Almost every time I go I see tables full of top chefs. That's both an amazing scene and a great sign of incredible food.
Best atmosphere?
Tacombi! It makes me feel at home. Not just the music and decor, but the authentic beverages, esquites, and tacos.
Favourite dinner spots?
A hidden gem?
Eataly — I know, not hidden at all! But their rotisserie section has a Prime Rib Sandwich that's literally just meat, olive oil, and fresh ground pepper. Insanely amazing.

Amirah began her career in fashion while attending FIDM — working for 7 For All Mankind and Fred Segal, then moving into high fashion through Interview Magazine, Karl Templer, and alongside Johan Lindeberg in the launch of BLK DNM. She brought that world with her when she walked into the kitchen. It never left.

The cakes are not just cakes. They are the fashion world's sweet tooth — and the art world's dessert table — and a kid's birthday dream — all in one room, with sprinkles on everything.

Founder, Editor & Creative · Antakly Projects

My career has never moved in a straight line, and that has always been the point. It began in fashion with a formative chapter at Vogue Italia, followed by an unlikely detour into finance. From there, film, PR, events and production. A role as Director at Wilhelmina Models in Dubai sharpened an eye already trained on people worth watching. Then came the years that shaped the platform: writing, editing, producing photo shoots, a short-lived photobooth business, lots of yoga and eventually Madrid, where the light is just right. Currently I am in the States in a new and exciting field, digital marketing for higher ed, but this remains my passion project. What started as a hobby back in 2003 evolved into Antakly Projects, leading to some exciting conversations, projects, and lots of joy. Throughout all of it, my best friend, one small white Shih-poo called Coco, has been present, unimpressed, and very fluffy.
