One of my favourite things about living in Dubai is the quick and magical escape just across the border in Oman. Last weekend, I joined a group of like-minded adventurers for a camping trip that most expats here eventually experience: sleeping under the stars in the breathtaking landscapes of Musandam.

The experience

Camping in Oman's Musandam Peninsula offers a breathtaking mix of dramatic limestone fjords and secluded beaches. You can either arrange an all-inclusive guided overnight trip to a remote beach via speedboat from Khasab, or enjoy legal wild camping with your own 4x4 vehicle.

There are many ways to do it, from luxury glamp camps with every amenity to full immersion in the wild. I chose the latter, opting to sleep outside under the stars with a fantastic group of people who, like me, crave regular breaks from the rhythm of city life to reconnect with nature. Our weekend was full of simple but deeply memorable moments: fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even midnight swims lit by glowing phosphorescence. The landscapes we explored were as diverse as they were stunning, from rugged mountain backdrops to quiet, secluded beaches.

"The night skies are impossibly clear. The silence of the desert or a quiet beach brings a kind of peace that is hard to describe until you have felt it."

Why Oman is so special for camping

Wild camping is not only legal but widely accepted in Oman, as long as you are outside of protected reserves and private land. This freedom allows you to pitch a tent or roll out your sleeping bag in valleys, on mountaintops, or by the sea.

  1. Diverse landscapesOman's terrain ranges from the dramatic dunes of Wahiba Sands to the majestic Hajar Mountains and the pristine beaches along the Arabian Sea. Each location offers a different kind of beauty.
  2. Starry skies and solitudeFar from city lights, the night skies are impossibly clear, perfect for stargazing. The silence of the desert or a quiet beach brings a kind of peace that is hard to describe until you have felt it.
  3. Authentic cultural encountersMany desert camps are run by Bedouin families who are generous with their hospitality, offering traditional coffee, dates, and stories around the fire.
  4. Safety and warm hospitalityOman is one of the safest countries in the region, and the locals are welcoming and respectful of travellers.
  5. Wildlife wondersIf you are lucky, you might spot Arabian Oryx, sea turtles, or even dolphins. Ras Al Jinz and the Daymaniyat Islands are especially rich in natural biodiversity.
Where to go

Some of the most popular beach camping spots in Musandam include Rocky Beach near Al Harf, accessible via a winding dirt road, and the shores near Khor Najd. Khor Najd is a spectacular, remote fjord accessible via a winding mountain track, ideal for a secluded camp with stunning views of both sea and cliffs. But really, half the adventure is in the journey: finding your own hidden spot along the coast or canyon.

A special mention for Luke and Claire, who fell in love on a trip exactly like this one. They are the faces behind Vanlifestraya, a popular Australian travel and lifestyle brand documenting their nomadic adventures across Australia in a custom-built Mercedes Sprinter van. After living in Dubai for a decade, Claire (a women's health coach and yoga teacher) and Luke (a fitness and movement coach) sold everything in late 2019, moved to Australia, and hit the road. Their van life has since evolved to include raising a family on the road, welcoming their son Beau and a second boy, exploring the continent as a family of four.

If you have not been yet, plan for it. Oman is raw, real, and beautiful.
