PHOTOGRAPHER MIYA MIZUNO
MIYA MIZUNO
INFLUENCES
His cinematic 'Twilight' series and theatrical command of light are a constant source of inspiration — the tension between the ordinary and the quietly uncanny.
Candid documentary street work — showing America in the 50s and 60s in a completely unique way. The camera as pure witness.
A photography style that is very gentle. Colour, composition, and simplicity — all depicted beautifully. A quietness that says everything.
3rd prize Best Photojournalism 2009. Als went to China and photographed coal miners in 2008 — the kind of work that directly shapes Miya's own dream shoots.

DREAM
SHOOTS
China's cities expand at breakneck speed, yet over half the population still lives in rural society. Miya wants to document the vast gap between fastest-growing and ancient-standing.
The ancient forest that inspired Princess Mononoke. Trees thousands of years old. A Crewdson-style light shoot in amongst them — with her father as model. Her very own wizard look-alike.
Photography and travel — but not travel photography. Personal projects woven into movement. A tiny lightbox. Cambodia as the starting point.
"My dream shoot would be to travel back in time to the 1950s–70s and work alongside Richard Avedon. He is one of my favourite portrait photographers of all time."

125 Magazine
Miya's favourite publication for non-commercial photographers — established and emerging. Every issue shows genuine individuality across photography, art, and fashion. Rankin's 'America' shoot in issue 15 is a standout favourite.
