From Power Rangers villainess to beauty founder — and now, a momtrepreneur

A personal note

It is a rare thing to watch a friend build not one but three companies out of nothing — rarer still to watch her do it while raising a daughter I'm lucky enough to call my niece. I've known Jennifer since long before Purlisse existed, back when she was better known for playing a villain on Power Rangers. Watching her turn a skin crisis into an empire, twice over, has been one of the more remarkable things I've gotten to witness up close.

The Origin

Before becoming a beauty entrepreneur, Yen played the villain Vypra on the television series Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. Wearing heavy stage makeup for long hours on set severely damaged her skin, leaving her with sensitive skin, chronic breakouts, hives, and rosacea. "I tried and tested every product on the market," she recalls, "and nothing worked."

Frustrated, she turned to a trusted source instead: her grandmother's time-honored beauty rituals. "My grandmother always had beautiful skin and a simple approach to her beauty regimen," Yen explains. "Growing up, she always drank white tea infused with blue lotus, and washed her face with soymilk." That personal quest for relief blossomed into a mission, and Purlisse was born.

The name says as much as the product does — Purlisse is drawn from the French words pur (pure) and lisse (smooth), a commitment to pure, effective ingredients that deliver calm, healthy skin. Today the line sits at the intersection of her grandmother's wisdom and modern French skincare technology.

"
I felt there was not a complete skincare line that helped my sensitive skin needs. I was searching for the perfect balance between nature and science.

Built By Hand

What sets Purlisse apart in a crowded market isn't only its formulation — it's its founder's intimate involvement. "I didn't have the luxury of hiring a big marketing or branding firm, so I was extremely hands-on," Yen says. "I worked closely with my chemist and my designer, and wrote all the copy myself. I call the buyers myself and go into the stores to educate customers."

That grassroots approach became her advantage. Hearing directly from customers — their feedback, their ideas — gave her the ability to build products people actually wanted, rather than what a boardroom guessed they might.

Expanding the World

After giving birth to her daughter, Gemma, Yen launched Yensa — remembering that she and her family had always lived what she calls a superfood lifestyle. "This led me to start Yensa, inspired by my last name, meaning color and face in Chinese — the superfood cosmetic. It's cosmetics meets superfood science. Each product is infused with eight superfoods, eight representing good luck, prosperity, and infinite possibilities in Chinese culture."

A scalp-care line, JooY, followed. "I respect both timeless beauty secrets and science," she says. "We start with nourishing ingredients rooted in superfoods that have supported health, beauty, and longevity for centuries, then work with chemists to power them with modern formulas. It's about balance — honoring my heritage while creating high-performing products for the everyday modern woman." That balance is how the brand's 8 SuperBlacks Essence was born: a fusion of heritage and high-tech innovation.

Beauty In Failure

Yen started her entrepreneurial journey during the 2008 recession and nearly lost everything. "Failing in the beginning of my journey wasn't easy for me. I lost my confidence, my pride, and almost my dignity — but luckily, I had great friends that supported me during that dark time. I believe there is beauty in failure, because you have a chance to rebuild yourself. I chose to get back up after being knocked down, and I made a promise to myself that on my way back up, I would use my influence for good, to help other women."

She traces her resilience back further, to acting. "Acting taught me invaluable lessons about rejection, resilience, and the power of connection. First comes the rejection — and I faced plenty of it, both as an actress and as an entrepreneur. Then comes resilience: the ability to keep going, doing, and believing even when no one else does. And ultimately, connection, because to truly move people, you have to be authentic."

Her Rules for Skin

  1. Use quality skincare, like Purlisse.
  2. Hydrate with water and white tea.
  3. Prioritize seven to eight hours of sleep.
  4. Take daily walks.
  5. Eat well.
  6. Don't stress — relax.
  7. Always protect skin with SPF 30.
  8. For sensitive skin, don't over-exfoliate.
  9. Laugh a lot, and keep fun friends close — it's great for your skin.
