Sleep Is Commercial is one of those collectives that grew the right way: from the inside out, through friendship first. Thank you Cem & Rg.

Francesco Assenza began his career in music as a songwriter in Italy, then switched to electronic music as a DJ and producer. In Rome he was a resident DJ at Goa Club and co-founded the Unpolite Record label. In 2006 he moved to Berlin, where he met Sarah Gatzhammer, who became his wife, and Andrea Ferlin, his best man and working partner. Together in 2008 they started Sleep Is Commercial: a small digital music label, but with a strong idea behind it, that grew organically through a network of friends who share similar feelings for music and life.

The collective developed into something larger than a label, bringing together musicians, visual artists, and designers. Collaborators have included Hubble, Daniele Papini, Topper, Vinicius Jayme Vallorani, Alessandro Baldoni, Michele "Boringvision" Zuddas, and Cliche Video. Artists on the label include Cem & Rg, Wareika, Bruno Pronsato, Ninca Lecee, Sonja Moonear, Stefny Winter, Pheek, Jakob Seidensticker, Easy Changes, Matt John, Sidsel Endresen, and Bugge Wesseltoft.

Francesco and Andrea also founded a fashion line: first one t-shirt, later an expanded collaboration with Berlin-based designer Livio Graziottin of Past Present.

"We want to thank everyone collaborating with Sleep Is Commercial, because they are giving us the opportunity to share feelings through music and art in what is a very fake music industry."

Greatest inspirations or influences?

I try to stay in tune with everything happening around me and I get inspired by different interpretations people give to their life, and how everyone finds their own way to get through it. This diversity gives me a sense of love, tolerance, and respect which I carry into my daily life.

Andrea Ferlin

DJ, Producer  ·  Co-founder, Sleep Is Commercial  ·  Cagliari, 1973

Andrea Ferlin was born in Cagliari in 1973. His interest in dance music began when he was fifteen years old and bought his first turntables. After a few years he started to play a sound different from anything else in Sardinia. Between 1992 and 1994 his sound shifted from house to acid, then into techno.

Since launching Sleep Is Commercial in 2008 and relocating to Berlin, he has developed a distinctive sound blending hypnotic grooves with experimentation. He has shared the booth with Richie Hawtin and Marco Carola, and released music on labels including Freak n'Chic, Mindshake, and Leftroom. Through collaborations and side projects, he continues to evolve his path between club culture and sonic exploration.

"It grew organically through a network of friends who share similar feelings for music and life."
