Thank you for joining me today, Joris.

Joris Voorn's professional career began around 2003, though music had been his world since 1996, when he started DJing in Rotterdam. He bought his first synthesiser, started working on tracks on his computer, and one or two years later released his first records. His debut EP, Muted Trax Pt.1 (2000), was a statement. Incident, from Lost Memories Pt.2 in 2003, was the track that changed everything.

In 2005 he launched his Green imprint, starting with the critically acclaimed A Dedicated Mind EP. That same year he delivered a masterclass in DJing with his Fuse Presents mix: a 40-track odyssey assembled with Ableton Live. By 2008 he had created Balance 014, weaving together Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, and Todd Terje into a double-CD mix that remains one of the most emotionally expansive compilations in electronic music history.

He remains at the forefront of electronic music, bridging underground credibility and broader appeal. Headlining Berghain. Wire Festival in Yokohama. Time Warp. His influence on the shape of techno is undeniable.

How did you start your career in music?

My professional career started around 2003. Before that music was a hobby, basically since 1996 when I started DJing. Later I bought my first synthesiser and started to work on my own tracks on the computer, which resulted one or two years later in releasing my first records.

02

Biggest influences or inspirations, particularly in creating Balance?

The biggest influence for creating the mixes has been the music in my collection. I was listening to as many different genres as I have, choosing what I wanted to work with. These different sounds inspired me to create the mixes the way they came out.

03

Favourite DJs and why?

One of my favourites used to be Derrick May for his driving combination of house and techno and his lively way of mixing. These days I think Laurent Garnier is still very good and versatile in his music. Richie Hawtin was also a favourite, but tends to be a bit strong these days. I like the way he has a constant groove going with all these things happening around it.

04

Best event you have been to?

One of my favourite events of the year is always the Wire Festival in Yokohama, Japan. The fans there are crazy and very supportive, and the vibe is very high energy. I also liked the WMC in Miami this year, it was my first time, but I will definitely come back. Last week Time Warp in Germany was great too, very big audience and lots of great techno artists.

05

You are known for your complex layering of tracks. Is it a technique you continue to develop?

I really like the results you can get by layering different tracks, combining sounds and melodies, instead of just the intro and outro beats. For me there is no way back to a conventional way of mixing a CD. It gives me more space to experiment, and you can come up with something completely new and original. So it is great.

06

Favourite tracks on Balance 014?

There are many favourite tracks and combinations on the mix, but Midori Pt. 11 is a highlight for me, combining the dubby elements of different tracks but leaving enough space to let the bass and vocals breathe.

07

Biggest challenges on creating Balance 014?

The biggest challenge was to keep things lively and organic, as I worked on my studio computer to do the mixes. Things can get a little static and boring if you are not careful enough.

"Finding the right combinations of tracks was quite a challenge: being able to find the magic combinations of two or more tracks, to create something more than the sum of its parts."

08

Plans for 2009?

Taking it a bit easy. I have worked like crazy the last few months, and that combined with the Balance tour does not leave much time to relax. But there are still some cool projects coming up: some remixes and releases, the first being my first Dusty House EP on my own Rejected Records. Later this year I will start work on my new album, hopefully to be released in 2010.

Update  ·  2023

More than twenty years after Muted Trax, Joris Voorn continues touring internationally. In 2023, speaking to Xceed ahead of an Ibiza season, he reflected on what has changed and what has not:

"A lot of things have changed since the first time I came to Ibiza. Parties are much bigger, it is a bit more VIP sometimes. But the vibe is really good. People are really interested in music, which is the one thing that remained the same."

On the question of what the eighteen-year-old Joris would say if he could see all that followed: "I would not say anything. Maybe that is not the answer you wanted to hear, but the great thing about starting on a musical journey is that you never know where it is going to end. I had no idea that I was going to be standing here, so many years later. Every show that I do, I am happy that I am able to do it. One of my life mottos is: ignorance is bliss. Sometimes not knowing something is better than knowing too much."
