PHOTOGRAPHER MARTA BEVACQUA

Marta Bevacqua is an Italian photographer and director based in Paris. She was born in Rome and grew up in a country house in the suburbs. At 17 she began shooting flowers, trees and the beautiful nature of her surroundings. Soon after she started taking portraits of her sisters and friends. The result is that in her work today you will still find that both nature and portraits of women are engrained in her visual DNA. Later on her interest in fashion sparked after attending a course at Central Saint Martins in London. In 2014 she decided to move to Paris, and the rest is fashion photography history.

I didn't know the language, I didn't have an apartment or any contact to work, but step by step I built everything in this city and after 9 years I'm still here, with my work and my new family (I had a baby one year ago). So let's say that in Paris I found much more than I was looking for :)

( Leila) Marta, this is an interview I am extremely excited about, we love your work, and we are very excited to get to know you and share this interview. Tell us about your greatest inspirations or influences please.

( Marta) When I decided for Paris, I admit it wasn't by chance. I didn't have a lot of choices, I wanted to live in a "fashion" city such as Milan (but wanted to leave Italy), London, New York (too far to just trying out ahaha) and Paris. I love Paolo Roversi's work. He's italian and he moved to Paris when he was young. Well, I never thought to follow his steps, but I told myself I could at least take the same big decision, and this is how I ended up to choose Paris. Paolo Roversi remains one of my greatest inspirations. At the moment, there are many others, but my list can be endless.

( Leila) We’d love to hear more about your creative process.

(Marta) I usually develop the first idea by doing an image research (I use Pinterest). When necessary, I prepare a mood board, where I can clear up the idea, understand its direction and if it works. I also use the mood board to find collaborators (make-up artists, hairstylists and stylists), while I usually contact model agencies to get the perfect model for it. I really like sharing the inspiration, give the others the freedom to express. The final work is just the perfect balance between all of us, it's a real collaboration where everyone puts its art.

(Leila) Anything coming up that we should know about?

(Marta) I had a long stop because of the pregnancy and the first months of my daughter. Right now, I feel like seeing things in a slightly different way, even if it's hard to explain. I just want to follow this instinct and see where it will bring me.

(Leila) What does wellbeing mean to you and anything in particular that you practice?

(Marta) Wellbeing means having the right energies to create.

I always had to create, since I was quite young. When you feel well, everything seems possible. It means that, with creating, you can go where you want, and this is the most exciting part of my job.
