Light, Color & Chance: A Conversation with Photographer and Film Lab Co-Founder Paula Codoner
Paula Codoner: The Valencia-Based Artist Mastering the Art of Floral Photography
We speak with the visual artist and Malvarrosa Film Lab co-founder about her stunning floral compositions, her love for analogue processes, and her vision for a more inclusive art world.
In our endless search for captivating visual voices, we were immediately drawn to the serene and luminous work of Paula Codoner. Based in Valencia, Spain, Paula is a multidisciplinary artist whose background in Product Design, Fine Art Photography, and a Master’s in Graphic Design converges into a uniquely refined aesthetic. As the co-founder of Malvarrosa Film Lab, she has a deep affinity for the analogue process, a love that shines through in her elegant client work for Broccoli Magazine, Refinery29, and Kate Spade. We were delighted to learn more about the inspirations and processes behind her beautiful imagery.
The Core Inspirations: Ikebana, Light, and Minimalism
Paula’s work feels like a breath of fresh air, and this is directly tied to her core inspirations. She draws not from other artists, but from the fundamental elements of beauty itself: "Light, color and nature." She specifically cites the profound influence of ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement), minimalism, and abstraction. This trinity of influences is instantly recognizable in her compositions—each frame is a carefully balanced, quietly powerful study of form, hue, and negative space.
A Creative Process Built on Experimentation
When asked about her creative process, Paula reveals a flexible and intuitive approach. "My creative process is different depending on the project... whether it is a commission or a personal project."
However, a golden thread runs through all her work: a passion for experimentation. "Something they will always have in common... is that I always love to experiment with light, colours and chance." This embrace of chance is particularly telling of her work with film photography, where the unexpected is often the source of magic.
A Year of Balance and a Vision for an Inclusive Future
Reflecting on the past year, Paula describes her creative journey as "a balance between experimentation and reflection." This thoughtful approach extends to her views on the art world at large.
She holds a modern and collective perspective on iconography, stating, "I don’t believe in a unique icon and figure of genius... there are many people creating and contributing to improve the world. All of them deserve the recognition."
This belief directly fuels her desire for change within the industry. "Yes I do [think the art world needs to change]. I think it is necessary that it improves based on inclusivity and diversity of artists- giving more room for different points of view and perspective."
Wellbeing: The Essential Balance
For an artist so in tune with natural harmony, Paula’s definition of wellbeing is beautifully straightforward and holistic. It is, for her, the achievement of "a good balance between health, family & friends, hobbies and work." It’s a reminder that the most stunning creativity often flourishes in a life that is nurtured on all fronts.
Paula Codoner’s work is a masterclass in quiet elegance and intention. She reminds us that profound beauty can be found in a single stem, perfectly lit, and that the future of art is diverse, inclusive, and brilliantly multifaceted.
