Deconstructing Hegemony: An Interview with Photographer Bettina Pittaluga on Authenticity

We speak with the artist about her powerful mission to deconstruct visual hegemony, the vital importance of human connection in her process, and her exciting projects for the year ahead.

In a world saturated with curated perfection, the work of Paris-based photographer Bettina arrives like a breath of fresh air. A French-Uruguayan artist with a background in sociology and reporting, her photography is an act of profound authenticity. She doesn't just capture an image; she captures a soul, a moment of truth, and a powerful emotion. We are deeply inspired by her committed practice and were thrilled to learn more about her inspirations and the driving force behind her poignant work.

Bettina’s approach is intrinsically linked to her past. Her studies in sociology and her time as a reporter have trained her eye to see the world as it is, not as it is often portrayed. This has evolved into a powerful artistic mission.

"I am focused on giving a voice and visibility to those who are not or too little represented," she states. "It is very important to me to do everything to deconstruct this hegemony; I am committed to invoke all these fights until they are won."

This commitment moves her work beyond aesthetics and into the realm of activism, using her lens as a tool for social change and representation.

When asked about her influences, Bettina’s response reflects her community-oriented and interdisciplinary ethos. She draws inspiration from the vibrant circle of talented friends and creators around her.

She cites the paintings of Neïla Ichti, the music of Tshegue and Nyoko Bokbae, the engaged poems of Sophia Ould-kaci, and the drawings of Lisa Signorini. ".. and many others, the list is too long!" she adds. This eclectic mix highlights that her creative fuel comes from a rich ecosystem of Black and marginalized artists, musicians, and thinkers, weaving a tapestry of mutual support and inspiration.

The Creative Process: A Sacred Space of Trust

For Bettina, the technical aspects of photography are secondary to the human connection required to create a meaningful portrait.

"To me, the relationship needs to exist, even if it is very short-lived. Human connections, sharing, confidence, for my part it is vital to my creation, it's always a shared creation."

She describes her process as building "an area of consideration, respect and caring all round, and I let the person be." This philosophy creates a safe, collaborative space where her subjects can reveal their most authentic selves, resulting in photographs that feel incredibly intimate and real.

Looking Forward: A Year of Documentaries and Exhibitions

Despite a year that challenged many artists' creativity, Bettina looks to the future with gratitude and purpose. "I think this wasn't the right moment to think about being productive or creative. I believe it was a time to focus on civic responsibility. Since the end of quarantine, it only strengthens my struggles."

This renewed focus is fueling an exciting slate of projects. "I am very grateful, I have a lot of things coming up, I am working on documentaries, music videos, and two exhibitions that are really important to me!"

Her final wish is simple yet profound, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of her work: "Hoping to share a lot of love through my photographs."

And share it, she does.
