Where Nature Meets Fashion: An Intimate Interview with Photographer Marta Bevacqua
We are thrilled to present a conversation with Marta Bevacqua, an Italian photographer and director whose work captures the profound, poetic intersection of raw nature and refined fashion. Based in Paris, Bevacqua’s imagery is instantly recognizable—a dreamlike world where the wild beauty of her Roman countryside upbringing meets the meticulous craft of haute couture.
Her journey began at 17, photographing the flowers and trees around her family's country home before turning her lens to her sisters and friends. That foundational connection to natural light and intimate portraiture remains ingrained in her visual DNA. A course at London's Central Saint Martins sparked her interest in fashion, but it was a bold, life-changing decision in 2014 that cemented her path: a move to Paris with no apartment, no contacts, and no fluency in the language.
“Step by step I built everything in this city,” she reflects. “And after 9 years I'm still here, with my work and my new family. So let's say that in Paris I found much more than I was looking for :)”
A Decision Inspired by a Master
When asked about her greatest inspirations, Bevacqua reveals that her move to Paris was both pragmatic and deeply symbolic. “I didn't have a lot of choices,” she admits. “I wanted to live in a 'fashion' city... I love Paolo Roversi's work. He's Italian and he moved to Paris when he was young.”
While not intentionally following his footsteps, she was inspired by his boldness. “I told myself I could at least take the same big decision, and this is how I ended up to choose Paris.” This nod to the legendary photographer highlights a lineage of Italian artists finding their voice in the French capital, with Roversi remaining a enduring inspiration in her career.
The Alchemy of a Collaborative Process
Bevacqua’s creative process is a testament to collaboration. It often begins with a spark of an idea, which she develops through extensive image research on platforms like Pinterest. “When necessary, I prepare a mood board,” she explains, “where I can clear up the idea, understand its direction and if it works.”
This mood board becomes the essential tool for building her team. She uses it to find and align with collaborators—makeup artists, hairstylists, and stylists—while she personally scouts for the perfect model to bring the vision to life. The final image is not a dictated outcome but a harmonious fusion of talents. “I really like sharing the inspiration, give the others the freedom to express. The final work is just the perfect balance between all of us.”
A New Chapter: Motherhood and a Shift in Perspective
After a pause for pregnancy and the first months with her daughter, Bevacqua is returning to her craft with a fresh perspective. “Right now, I feel like seeing things in a slightly different way, even if it's hard to explain,” she shares. “I just want to follow this instinct and see where it will bring me.” This hints at an exciting new evolutionary phase in her already celebrated body of work.
Wellbeing as Creative Fuel
For an artist whose work feels so effortlessly serene, her definition of wellbeing is perfectly aligned with her purpose. “Wellbeing means having the right energies to create,” she states. “When you feel well, everything seems possible.”
This simple yet powerful philosophy underscores her entire career. It means that through the act of creation, she can transport herself and her audience anywhere. “This is the most exciting part of my job.”
