25 YEARS OF VOGUE ITALIA COVERS
Steven Meisel
This year marked Franca Sozzani's 25 years as editor in chief of Vogue Italia, the fashion magazine considered to be the most controversial of all.
When I worked at Vogue Italia, I never understood why we always had to shoot all our covers with Meisel, as I thought it was important to give the opportunity to other photographers but later on I realized that Franca's vision was to keep a visual identity consistent while highlighting the different social issues of the times including ecological disasters ( see cover below BP Oil spill influence) and war. American Vogue had the idea of putting celebrities in their covers first but Franca has been making bold statements being the first Vogue to have plus size models on the cover and glamourized plastic surgery.
This October Vogue Italia is collaborating with Dubai Mall to create " Vogue Fashion Experience" where eight upcoming designers — Wadah Al Hajri from Qatar, Mohammad Ashi from Kuwait, Razan Alazzouni from Saudi Arabia, Lulwa Al Amin from Bahrain, Ituen Basi from Nigeria, Simone Rocha from Ireland, Andrea Incontri from Italy and Esme Vie from Russia — will come together to showcase their designs. The event will be screened across the mall’s multimedia displays to an expected audience of over 400,000 visitors.
