Naseeb: Trafficked  ·  Visual Artist  ·  Documentary Photographer

London-based visual artist and photojournalist. Masters in Photojournalism, University of Westminster. PhD candidate in Film Studies, King's College London. Her work casts a social documentarist's eye on marginalised communities.

Her thoughtful and compassionate approach teases out the larger forces engulfing her protagonists. The work does not leave you unchanged.

Sonal Kantaria is a visual artist based in London. She holds a Masters in Photojournalism from the University of Westminster and is currently undertaking a PhD in Film Studies at King's College London. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, shown at the Whitechapel Gallery, the Ikon Gallery, the Photographers' Gallery, Autograph ABP, and the Perth Centre for Photography.

Her project Naseeb: Trafficked incorporates stills and moving footage and takes an intimate look into the dramatic stories of young Indian women who have been kidnapped or sold into prostitution and subsequently rescued from the brothels of Mumbai and Calcutta. The work brings into sharp focus the gender, economic, and class disenfranchisement that has coerced millions of Indian women into the flesh trade. It was shown as a solo exhibition at the Perth Centre for Photography in 2013 and by Next Level Projects in London, presented by Autograph ABP in 2012.

She has completed artist residencies at the Perth Institute for Contemporary Art, the Perth Centre for Photography, and with the City of Greater Geraldton in Western Australia, where she was commissioned to teach photography to Aboriginal teenagers and to facilitate a refugee settlement project at Curtin University.

A second major project exploring a diverse range of individuals of Indian heritage who have left their homelands to settle in Australia, and the younger generation who grew up there. The work explores questions of migration, identity, and settlement, bringing together portraiture and the local Australian landscape. Shown at the Ballarat Biennale, 2013.

"Growing up in the UK as a third-generation Indian has frequently presented questions surrounding my own identity and culture. My background prompted my decision to undertake this project."

"The project I undertook in India on human trafficking was grueling. The stories heard on a day-to-day basis by the young women I photographed and interviewed were horrific. I am eternally grateful to all my subjects who shared their stories."

The conversation
01

Greatest inspirations and influences?

Influences include Magnum photographers such as Larry Towell, Alec Soth, and Susan Meiselas. The work of many female photographers: Jodi Bieber on domestic violence in South Africa and women in Afghanistan. Mary Ellen Mark's Falkland Road work has been a great influence. Eugene Richards' body of work in Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue was inspirational in its depth of subject and harrowing portrayal of the drugs issue in the US.

02

The challenges of what you do?

Ideas are not a problem, but access to undertake projects is sometimes tough. The key is to be persistent.

03

What would be a dream project?

A commission from Time magazine would be a dream. So far I have worked on personal projects which are important to me.

04

What are you most proud of?

"The project I undertook in India on human trafficking was grueling. The stories heard on a day-to-day basis by the young women I photographed and interviewed were horrific. This was a tough project both emotionally and physically. I am eternally grateful to all my subjects who shared their stories."
