A VISUAL DIARY BY CARLOS TORRETTA
In 2011, Just before his career as a top model agent took off at society management, in New York,, I interviewed Carlos Torretta who’d created a visual diary called El Salvawhore. The purpose, purely inspirational. A visual moodboard with imagery of some of his favourite photographers such as: Juergen Teller, and Helmut Newton. "I am very interested in post productions, and my blog might help other creatives with ideas”. Torretta originally from Madrid, Spain moved to the US to go to boarding school. His father, Roberto Torretta, is a known and influential fashion designer in Spain so artistic influence have always been in his blood. Constantly surrounded by artists and creatives in his social circle of friends, creating el salvawhore was kind of a natural progression seeing as fashion and art are such a big part of his life.
Carlos why did you start El Salvawhore?
Living in New York, I am surrounded by artistic people in all walks and mediums and wanted to find an outlet for my artistic inspirations. Looking at other blogs really influenced my decision to finally embark on this project because I always felt there was something missing and I wanted to do a fully rounded inspiration portfolio. My girlfriend is a fashion consultant and is constantly scouring books, magazines and websites for sources of inspiration and it was really her that inspired me to compile images that I was stockpiling as well. Additionally, I am rarely without my Contax T2 camera and a lot of the images are actually my own.
How did the name come about?
Well this is actually a funny story. My best friend photographer Max Snow made up this name. He loves to prank people and he decided it would be extremely funny to post my number on a male dating website and have people call me non-stop...he needed a name for the profile so as he always teases me and tells me Im mexican etc etc...he thought of El SALVADOR..and the EL SALVAWHORE. I thought it was funny to use it for my website.
What are your greatest inspirations or influences?
My heritage is Spanish and Argentinian so anything that represents those two cultures are inevitably favorites of mine; from bullfights to gauchos, these are my greatest sources of inspiration.
Fashion of course is a great source of inspiration for me too. MIxing is everything for me...nothing looks better than a Balenciaga heel next to a hunting scene.
