Caroline Mort is a 19-year-old Junior at Barnard College in New York City majoring in Art History and Visual Arts and a booking intern at MeanRed Productions. In high school she took a number of art classes and created a portfolio to supplement college applications but did not think herself fit for an actual art school and went to Barnard instead. When she first got to Barnard she was a proposed linguistics major but soon discovered an interest in photography through a polaroid camera that she bought on a whim. One night she took her polaroid camera to a crazy electro concert and a nightlife photographer suggested that she do something with her photos, and so she did.
To get assigned editorial documentary projects through US/UK music magazines and photograph bands behind the scenes on their tours, à la 1970's Rolling Stone. I've done some work for 'Sup and Self-Titled Magazines, which has been a great opportunity for a college student, but I'm looking to move onto larger publications in the future.
Greatest inspirations or influences?
I mostly photograph at either nightlife or concert venues because I'm so interested in music, and as much as I love seeing my nightlife comrades and hearing great DJs and bands, I find the concept of nightlife strange and sad. I suppose this irony is the inspiration behind my attempt at a cinematic representation of what goes on after dark.Favorite artists?
One of my favourite photographers is Ali Scarpulla (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliscarpulla/). Her work is surreal beyond belief. I like Lauren Dukoff's work involving beind-the-scenes band documentary work and her portraits of Devendra Banhart. I'm also a fan of Steven Klein's work because it is so creepy and borderline perverse, especially his recent shoot he did for Vogue Italia titled "Amber's Story".Favorite websites?
They might not be the most intellectual sites, but I regularly visit Viceland.com, Hipsterrunoff.com, Textsfromlastnight.com, and Asianmandan.comDream dinner guest would be?
I'd love to dine on a rooftop with Wes Anderson or Daniel Day-Lewis. Why these two men have not yet collaborated on a film is one of the great mysteries of life.Favorite cultural hot spot in the world ?
I have this desperate longing to drop out of school and move to London. The bands coming out of the UK right now may or may not be one of the reasons for my continued respiration. I also enjoy cloudy weather. I almost went to school in the UK but my Irish-blooded mother was for some reason frightened that I would marry a Scotsman and convinced me to stay in the US.Anything else youd like to share with our audience?
I encourage you to take a gander at TheCultureOfMe.com by Jeff Meltz. Jeff has been my mentor and elder brother figure in this crazy music and nightlife world and I couldn't have done it without him.
