56 Leonard

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON HERZOG & DE MEURON’S 56 LEONARD STREET

New Yorkers are talking about Herzog & de Meuron's 56 Leonard project- a 57 story residential complex in Tribeca that architects describe as “houses stacked in the sky,” but that wont be for those scared of heights.

Fall 2010, residents will start calling the $650 million luxury building home where residences, all 2 to 5-bedrooms, will range from $3.5 million to $33 million.

The Switzerland-based architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has achieved international recognition for buildings, houses, libraries, schools, stores, museums, hotels, and arenas —

Projected Occupancy: Fall 2010
Design Architect: Herzog & de Meuron, Basel, Switzerland
Project Architects: Vladimir Pajkic, Philip Schmerbeck , Mehmet Noyan
Executive Architect: Costas Kondylis and Partners, New York

High & Wild Adventures

Mount Everest Skydives
Starting in October you could be amongst the first to enter the international record books by being part of the most amazing skydiving adventure in the world.

This adventure surpasses any experience in skydiving so far. Since 1991 the skydiving and BASE jumping communities have landed onto both the North and South Poles, and BASE jumped Angel Falls, Venezuela.
The Mount Everest (29,035ft) Skydive pushes the boundaries harder and higher, for this is a challenge taking skydiving into two harsh and extreme environments ~ high altitude and extreme cold.

The jump dates in Nepal cheat the 200mph jet stream that roars across Everest's summit, and the Drop Zone (DZ) is the highest in the world at 12,350ft.

For the first time ever, non-professional skydivers can plunge from a helicopter poised right near the peak of Nepal’s most infamous mountain.

I can't wait to watch the first videos of these adventurists in their glorious fall and profile them on their experience.

Court Jones

I recently came across the site of  Court Jones, and I absolutely had to share the work of this caricaturist/illustrator based in California.

Poo Happens

I loved this post I found on Notcot, which is a community of creatives, design lovers, and trendsetters - where .org serves as the studio bulletin board gone digital - each image and caption brings you to a place worth visiting. It's about sharing what inspires you. Bookmarks, del.icio.us, digg, blogrolls, etc. make you read, search and think.
So check out Poo Poo Bags by Berlin based design agency Jungesschactel where their simple but funky and innovative idea for "poo bags" was based out of their passion for dogs and design.

All For Africa

Madalina Costache recently joined All for Africa a non profit organization that is "poised" to revolutionize the development of the continent because she could not understand how it was possible that after more than 20 years and trillions of dollars in international aid Africa actually seems worse off now. She believes that most of the organizations that donated money didn’t look at the situation beyond “right now”. Their response to the desperation people were facing was to implement short term solutions which of course didn’t make a substantial difference. It seemed like a no brainer for her to join this new organization with an innovative approach to poverty alleviation. They are developing projects that are sustainable and will empower the continent from within and make it less dependant on outside help. She has been working on an exciting event "Knock Out Poverty" that will take place on September 23rd at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Tell us about the event you have been working on?
In order to raise All for Africa’s profile in the New York non profit scene we decided to start an annual party that would secure a solid donor basis. The event developed into a night of boxing-music-comedy which we named “Knock out Poverty” The theme of the night is Africa, heads of state will be in attendance, the boxing events are sanctioned by the IBF and the music program is led by Grammy Winner Youssou N’Dour from Senegal. George Wolfe who ran the New York Public Theatre for over a decade (and also directed the well-received HBO film Lackawanna Blues) brought his expertise to the table and added elements of high intensity that will keep the crowd excited.

The latest major development is that we just decided to open the event to people that love getting involved with great causes but who can't afford to spend $2500 or $1000 on a ticket so the second balcony of the Hammerstein is on sale for $85 per seat. We did that as an effort to encourage young entrepreneurs, young activists and in general young professionals or students to get involved with this great cause. For $85 one can see 3 great boxing fights, incredible performances from Grammy award winners (yes we have 2 Grammy winners but I’m not allowed to disclose the second one we will keep it as a surprise) free drinks and free food.

You currently went to Africa, tell us about that experience?

I went in August for the first time as I felt that in order to be a true advocate of this cause, I needed to experience firsthand what it is like there. Being there made me understand more where I stand today and what I am able to do at this point in my life for the people on this continent. I really loved the reddish roads and how they contrasted with the vegetation I loved hanging out with kids and having that interaction where you don’t have to be guarded and calculated. I loved the people and how they smiled from within (it wasn’t like that NY robotic smile when just the corners of the mouth turn up while everything else stays the same) and I loved the fact that I was able to travel without heels and makeup! ( Besides her passion for philanthropy, Madalina is also a Louboutin collector).

Favorite brands?

Missoni its feminine and warm
Chanel because …its ridiculously overpriced but we all crave to own at least a piece and that piece will last us a lifetime. Christian Louboutin because his shoes are the trademark of the sensual woman

Favorite restaurants?

I love Asia de Cuba the food there is amazing. As a casual place I like Houston’s. They have best ribs best chicken salad and tuna salad and their fries…well their fries can shame any French bistro in new york

This too shall pass… “King Solomon once searched for a cure against depression. He assembled his wise men together. They meditated for a long time and gave him the following advice: Make yourself a ring and have thereon engraved the words "This too shall pass". The King carried out the advice. He had the ring made and wore it constantly. Every time he felt sad and depressed, he looked at the ring, whereon his mood would change to happy”

ZÜR

I was recently in Colombia when I came across a wonderful handbag collection called ZÜR, so I am very excited to interview Catalina Freiye and her business partner Juliana Azcárate that conceptualized their brand in October 2003. Catalina Freiye received a degree in political science and international relations from Javeriana University in Bogotá, and has always had a passion for design. Juliana Azcárate graduated from Bentley College in Boston and got a degree in fashion marketing from the Art Institute of Art and Design in Miami. Both take a part in all roles of the company, which go from design to business strategy and I am looking forward introducing their brand and wonderful products to the International market.

How did you begin ZÜR Handbags?

We started talking about the idea of having our own business and we concluded that there was a lack of handbags stores in Colombia, and the ones that were in the market didn't offer exactly what we wanted or were looking for. We wanted to design big handbags, mochila bags that incorporated many colors, textures and different artisan craftsmanship.

Challenges of starting your own brand?

One of the challenges is waiting to become profitable. When you start a new business you have to work with passion and persistence in order to start seeing results. You can't quit at the beginning because it takes time and lots of dedication, but once you start your own business you want to work harder day by day because you know it is yours. That is a great sensation.

Inspirations for the designs of the brand.

The ZÜR philosophy is to develop designs that incorporate contrasting colors and designs for feminine and modern women.

All the different cultures that exist in Colombia inspire us. The idea is to rescue all the glamour and creativity of these ancestral techniques and apply them to a modern a sophisticated product.

Any plans to bring ZÜR to NYC?

Our plan is to find a good representative that can represent us in high end boutiques that like our product.

Differences in the fashion industry between NYC and in your experience in Colombia

In NYC you have all the information, the industry gurus, and all the technology to create and to compete in the market. In Colombia you need to travel in order to be able to be a pioneer in the industry. We have great workers and lots of artisans that are very talented. As designers from Colombia we must travel a lot, especially to NYC to get some inspiration and to buy hardware, fabrics, etc.

Favorite stores?

Corso Como 10. Milan, Italy. One of Milan's most frequented and fashionable spots with great music, food and shopping. First the restaurant, then the shopping :).

Cavalli at Fifth Avenue NYC: when you enter the store you feel like in a disco. The decoration is very modern and elegant. He plays with mirrors very well.

Dior Homme at 57 ST NYC: We love this store because is very chic and elegant. It has dark mirrors all over the store and dark carpet. The decoration is very clean and sober, creating a gallery-like setting.

Apple store in NYC: Glass cube on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue is an incredible structure. Apple has been a leader in design, in advertising, and their products are beautiful.

Favorite brands and why?

Y-3: This brand is an exclusive collaborative project between Adidas and Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto. This designer is one of the most avant-garde designers of our time, and the fusion between Adidas and Yohji is great!!

GUCCI: Gucci has been on the market for a very long time, but has been able to revive its brand, its image and the designs. The designs of each store are super cool and extremely elegant but still modern.

ZARA: Zara is a perfect example of a great idea. Zara incorporates the best quality stitching, great designs and affordable prices. Zara stores are always located with the top stores in the fashion industry. Zara strategy and positioning of the brand has been perfect and the image of Zara is "the best designs for the best prices". Love it.

What is your favorite color?
We love the color black, and it's my favorite color because it's great to wear a black outfit or a black t-shirt etc for the day or for the night. When you wear the color black you tend to look thinner and elegant. It's a color that is always fashionable, it doesn't matter the season.

Favorite quote?

Typozon

Cristian Vargas, a famous Colombian designer created Typozon in 2005, a design studio that focuses on design, illustration and unique art projects.
In a short time Typozon projects have been published in many International magazines, books and creative web
sites and has been exhibited in museums and private art galleries in Colombia, Argentina, Spain and China.

Tell us about your creative process.

I mix natural elements ( animals, plants) with urban scapes (cities,
buildings, structures ) to create analogies and contrasts between these two, and
create new things.

I'm always drawing in my sketch pad and I take some of those ideas to inspire my projects.

What are some of the highlights of your career?

The publication of Typozon in books and magazines like Look de Book
(Barcelona), IdN(Hong Kong) where I was one of the winners of the
Black and White Contest for the 15th anniversary of the magazine.
Atlas world book of graphic design, where they posted all the best
graphic design studios around the world.

How is design in Latin America in contrast to the US and Europe?

There is a difference in styles and shapes management, but the biggest
difference in my opinion is the perception of color. An example is that in the
equator line, we have the same weather all the time, and in other
countries seasons change which affects the mood of the people so they experiment with colors based on the weather.
Latin American people like contrast palettes of colors.

Artists that inspire you

Kandinsky, Mucha, Klimt

Favorite Brands

Mont Blanc, Adidas, Apple and Levi's.

What are your future plans?

My long term plans is to continue working with current and new clients from all over the world. I will love getting to work with some of my favorite brands. I also want to work in more multipurpose projects that involve various design fields. Right now I'm planning to create a fashion brand called "GOLD School" and am working to produce a sequel of a book that I printed out in 2007 called Loadind, (a story book with a game of typography and illustrations.
